To empower individuals through self-awareness and confidence, embodying the principles of empowerment, serenity, authenticity, and resilience represented by the name ESAR.
With over 15 years of experience in various therapies, working with families, youth, and trauma survivors, Sarah Incerti brings a unique blend of professional skills and personal life experiences to her psychotherapy services at ESAR.
As a qualified psychotherapist, Sarah’s passion for wellbeing and psychoeducation shines through in her work, guiding individuals and families towards growth, connection, and authenticity.
After working 8 years at Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison in an intensive therapeutic unit, Sarah honed her ability to build trust with high-profile prisoners, including gang leaders and individuals dealing with trauma. Recognising their lack of guidance and respect in the past, Sarah’s honest and relatable approach to therapy sparked a transformation from despair to hope, yielding successful outcomes both within and beyond the prison setting. "I had put off seeing a therapist as I had not had much luck finding one that could take on my strong personality and guide me through what I needed to be guided through...
Things were not going well for me and I held onto a lot of anger, self-doubt and resentment. I would not let anyone in as I saw being vulnerable as a path to being hurt and a weakness. I had reached my mid-fifties without really knowing who I was.
Seeking out someone I could talk to and that I felt comfortable with scared the pants off me. They were going to get to know the real me and I was going to tell them stuff that I had never told anyone … they were going to JUDGE ME….. and they may think I was a truly terrible person and not be able to help me as I was too mixed up and broken.
But I also realised things had to change as I was stagnating. I put my feelers out and landed on Sarah. I liked her from the start, her calm and no-nonsense way, the way that she gently peeled back the layers of me to help me discover who I am. There was never a time I felt forced to share, and there were sessions when nothing of importance was discussed. Sarah went at my pace, knowing when to push and when to not to. She really listened and understood, she explained why I reacted the way I did in certain situations and why I felt so lost … and how to make changes in my life so that I can thrive. She taught me how not to get caught back up in my “life traps.”
The changes were not sudden, and there was no blinding flash moment, but I noticed a change in how I reacted in certain situations, the anger was gone, and I began to believe in myself and that I am a strong and capable woman. I have a sense of calmness about me now. I no longer care what people think as I know that I am a good person who is capable of so much more than I ever allowed myself to be.
I now see being vulnerable as a superpower. This is all down to Sarah and her patience and ability as a therapist. I feel truly blessed to have had her counsel me as I really feel I could not have gone to anyone better”.
